PG BIG Adapts Its Case Management Style During Covid-19
As I sit down to reflect on this past month, I find myself in a bit of a fog. It is truly unbelievable to think we have only just begun this journey, this new way of life and even though the future is uncertain, I know we will get through it – together.
I want to take a moment to thank the Brain Injury Alliance for being a stable and reliable entity during this time of crisis and uncertainty. It is because of this funding we were able to act quickly and adapt our programs to serve our member’s when they needed us most. Thank you.
PG BIG became a fluid being over the course of a month. Each day seemed to bring more information and, therefore, change. Our first initiative was to start a hamper program for our members who were most vulnerable (marginalized, homeless, risk of homeless). We recognized that many would no longer be able to rely on service programs or community members to have access to foods and household good. When the risk of being out in the community became too great, PG BIG started delivering hampers on a weekly basis; The hampers consist of fresh fruit, veggies, dairy products, canned and dry goods as well as household essentials (toilet paper, soaps, and hygiene products). We were fortunate to have such an incredible response to our call for donations. We received donations from local organizations, individuals as well as PG BIG members. We became a part of a Facebook Group called COVID PG Volunteers for All and have an ongoing thread where community members are able to see what is needed and talk to a Case Manager. We foresee this need will continue to grow over the next few weeks and months.
PG BIG has adapted its Case Management style to accommodate those who are staying safe and isolating at home. Instead of coming into our main office, we are working remotely over the phone and through social media and video messaging tools. They are assisted with housing (maintaining or finding housing), finances (PWD, CPPD, new COVID financial supplements), health (liaison with medical professionals, navigate telehealth tools to lessen the burden on our stressed healthcare system) as well as education and support (navigating crisis with a brain injury, coping strategies). Our members face extraordinary challenges during this unprecedented time. We recognize that their mental health and well-being is top priority and started check in services immediately. Our team utilizes our Facebook page to reach out, talk about COVID, explore coping strategies and safety precautions as well as help our members stay connected.
As always, we will continue to serve our members as much as we possibly can for as long as we possibly can.
Together, we will get through this.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
